LOUVERED PERGOLAS · TECHNICAL GUIDE
A louvered pergola has to move water and resist site loads.
The visual design is only part of the system. Roof drainage, post locations, foundations, wall attachment, wind exposure, snow or other design loads, screens, lighting and electrical components all influence the final configuration.
Follow the water path.
Louvers
Rain reaching the roof needs to enter the system’s intended drainage path when the louvers are in the applicable closed position.
Perimeter channels
Integrated gutters or channels collect water and move it toward designated discharge points.
Posts / outlets
Many systems route water through posts or dedicated outlets, which means post locations and final discharge need to be planned together.
Do not stop the review at the pergola itself. The project also needs to decide where discharged water goes on the property and whether grade, drains or adjacent construction can receive it appropriately.
Site exposure changes structural demand.
Freestanding and wall-connected pergolas can experience different load paths. Site exposure, height, surrounding buildings, topography, module size, post spacing, anchors, foundation conditions and accessories can all affect structural requirements. Final engineering should follow the actual project and selected system.
Accessories add load and interfaces.
| Accessory | Coordination issue |
|---|---|
| Retractable / zip screens | Guide alignment, wind exposure, post geometry, power and cassette location. |
| Lighting | Wiring routes, drivers, controls and waterproof connections. |
| Heaters / fans | Electrical capacity, mounting loads, clearances and manufacturer limitations. |
| Glazing / enclosure | Added wind effects, foundations, drainage and movement need separate review. |
Common questions.
Can pergola water simply drain onto the patio?
That depends on site grading, drainage capacity and the selected system. The discharge path should be intentionally coordinated so water is not directed toward the building, sensitive finishes or unwanted areas.
Does every pergola need engineering?
Requirements vary by municipality, structure, attachment, size, site and project conditions. Structural responsibility and any permit or engineering requirement should be confirmed for the actual project before installation.
Can screens be added later?
Sometimes, but it is better to plan them early because guide positions, post dimensions, cassette space, power and wind exposure can affect the original pergola configuration.
