Loading Dock Door Planning

Coordinate the overhead door, operator, clearances, traffic and dock interface before equipment is released. The goal is a loading-bay opening that works as one system.

Door types

Match the door to the loading-bay duty cycle.

Commercial Sectional Doors

A common fit for shipping and receiving bays where insulation, clearances, serviceability and operator selection are primary considerations.

High-Speed / High-Performance Doors

Useful where frequent cycles, forklift traffic, environmental separation or process speed create a stronger operational case.

Rolling / Compact Openings

Where ceiling conditions or security requirements make a rolling configuration preferable, curtain, hood, guides and operator space need coordinated review.

Cold & Conditioned Facilities

Door speed, insulation, seals, condensation and traffic frequency should be evaluated together rather than as separate product decisions.

Interface checklist

What should be coordinated at the dock.

  • Door opening and headroom
  • Track / guide / hood clearances
  • Operator and power location
  • Dock leveler geometry
  • Vehicle restraint and shelter interfaces
  • Safety sensors and controls
  • Traffic sequence and activation
  • Service and maintenance access

Dock levelers, restraints, seals, shelters and related equipment are not automatically included in ARTMETA's scope. Where relevant, their interfaces are reviewed and supply responsibility is confirmed in writing.

Common questions

Before you quote the bay.

Can the dock door and operator be selected independently?

They should be coordinated. Door weight, cycle frequency, controls, safety devices, power and the traffic sequence all affect operator selection.

When is a high-speed door worth considering?

Typically when cycle frequency, environmental separation, interior traffic or downtime make faster operation materially useful. The operating brief should justify the category.

Can ARTMETA coordinate with the dock-equipment supplier?

Yes. Where another party supplies the leveler, restraint, seals or shelters, the opening interfaces can be reviewed with the project team before release.
